UFC Fight Night: Swick vs. Burkman Prefight Picks

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Mike Swick vs. Josh Burkman

Who we want to win: Mike Swick
Who we think will win: Mike Swick

Mike Swick is going to win this fight for two main reasons. The first is that Swick has been fighting much bigger and stronger opponents. Fighting Burkman will feel like the first time you run after taking off the ankle weights. Swick was dominating people at 185 as a small middle weight and now he is the big guy. Second, Burkman can’t convert when he has a big fight (Jon Fitch and Karo Parisyan), where as Swick has already proven he can (Joe Riggs and David Loiseau).

Nate Diaz vs. Alvin Robinson

Who we want to win: Nate Diaz
Who we think will win: Nate Diaz

Nate Diaz is really dominating right now and is going to keep on rising until a title shot as long as he can keep his mental game together. Cote vs. Drew McFedries

Patrick Cote vs. Drew McFedries

Who we want to win: Patrick Cote
Who we think will win: Patrick Cote

Patrick is a very strong fighter and is just now proving what he can do. He is on a high after knocking out Kendall Grove and I think the momentum will push him through McFedries.

Michihiro Omigawa vs. Thiago Tavares

Who we want to win: Don’t Care
Who we think will win: Thiago Tavares

I see this fight as a rebound for Tavares. Omigawa loss a decision to Matt Wiman and has a losing record. Tavares was undefeated until his loss to Tyson Griffin. Tavares is a much better fighter and I think the UFC is giving him this fight to put some wind back in his sails.

UFC Fight Night Results - Spencer Fisher vs. Sam Stout

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Spencer Fisher

Winner: Spencer Fisher

Both fighters come out swinging. They exchange then they pull out. The come together again and Spencer Fisher lands some bombs on Stout. They separate and Fisher goes for a take down but Stout reverses and clinches Fisher against the fence. They separate and return to the middle of the octagon. Spencer continues to land punches in off and on exchanges. Rogan comments that it would almost appear that Spencer Fisher is the kick boxing champion in this fight when it really is Stout. They exchange more and Fisher ends up with a bad cut over his right eye. Stout starts to push and land some good punches. As the round closes Stout and Fisher each land huge punches on each other.

The second round begins and they come out as if the first round never ended. Spencer in the first minute dominates Stout and holds the center of the octagon and lands some good shots and continues to deliver damage in combos. They continue to exchange as Fisher lands a superman punch and follows with a knee close to the fence. Spencer Fisher throws leg kicks and punches with few answers from Stout. They continue to throw back and forth until near the end of the round and Spencer attempts a take down but the training Stout has been receiving from Randy Couture and Dan Henderson proves well and he defends. The round ends and Spencer Fisher is up two rounds to none.

The third round starts and Fisher’s face looks horrible despite his current domination. The pace has slowed a little but both fighters are fully engaged. A minute in Spencer Fisher lands a huge straight punch and it looks to have swollen Stout’s right eye a bit. Stout continues to attempt some combos but Fisher defends expertly and returns with a strong left. They exchange body kicks and Fisher lands a huge punch and Fisher tries to close in and finish but Stout’s impressive jaw holds strong and he weathers the small storm. Fisher lands punch after punch finally beating up Stout’s face. As the round closes out Spencer Fisher has a a pep in his step and looks fresh while Stout looks sluggish. At about ten seconds left Fisher raises his hands in triumph and then the horn blows. Shortly after Spencer Fisher wins the unanimous decision and has his hand raised.

UFC Fight Night Results - Thiago Tavares vs. Jason Black

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Winner: Thiago Tavares

Tavares shoots in early in the round but Jason Black lands on top and has control. After a brief scramble Black stands it back up. Tavares goes in for a take down and Black sprawls really well but Tavares redirects Black’s momentum and almost takes Black’s back. Tavares transitions from one dominate position to the next. Tavares eventually gets in Black’s full guard and gets in an amazing posture and bombs punches on Black to finish the round. At the end of the round Black’s right eye was almost completely swelled shut.

The second round begins with Black taking the center of the octagon. He throws some weak punches. Tavares throws a huge high kick that Black catches. He throws Tavares down but Thiago gets back up and shoots on Black. Tavares wraps Black and picks him up and slams him on the ground. Tavares pushes the pace and tries to return to the position that he had in the first round. Black then throws an arm lock on Tavares but Thiago stays calm and brings Black back into his guard then traps him in a leg triangle that forces Jason Black to tap.

UFC Fight Night Results - John Fitch vs. Roan Carneiro

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Winner: John Fitch

Fitch and Carneiro circle each other. They exchange punches and surprisingly Carneiro takes the former wrestling captain at Purdue, Fitch, down with relative ease. They scramble a bit in Fitch’s guard until Carneiro gets the advantage in the North/South position. Carneiro works Fitch into an anaconda choke. Fitch looks like he is in trouble but Carneiro couldn’t roll him and Fitch escaped to get back to his feet and in the process land some good knees. Fitch pushes Carneiro to the fence but gives up double under hooks and eventually sucks Fitch and gets another take down. Fitch tries to wriggle his way out but almost gets stuck in the same position as he was earlier in the round. Carneiro was working for a guillotine or an anaconda choke but the round ended.

In the second round Fitch came out quick with a leg kick and managed to fend off another take down attempt by Carneiro. As they came out of a quick clinch Fitch stalked Carneiro and landed a series of huge punches that slumped Carneiro to the ground against the fence. Fitch landed in a mount on top and rained punches. Carneiro almost swept Fitch but John was able to swing around Carneiro in an impressive display of his wrestling talent. Fitch was able to seize the stunned Carneiro’s back and sink in a rear naked choke for the win.

UFC Fight Night Results - Chad Reiner vs. Anthony Johnson

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Winner: Anthony Johnson

This is a fight I didn’t research because I didn’t expect the McFedries fight to be so quick. So watching this fight I had no idea what to expect. Hearing the commentary that Reiner went three rounds with Josh Burkman from Joe Rogan I would probably have picked Reiner. But Anthony Johnson showed that whatever past fights Reiner had been in in the past were irrelevant as he barely threw over five punches to knock out Chad Reiner in under thirty seconds.

UFC Fight Night Results - Drew McFedries vs. Jordan Radev

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Winner: Drew McFedries

McFedries comes in quick throwing hard. He catches Radev early and gets him up against the fence. They come off the cage and McFedries throws a high kick. The two fighters pull away momentarily then McFedries pounces and throws a left then comes underneath with a huge uppercut and connects on Jordan Radev’s chin dropping him to the floor. McFedries jumps on the downed Radev and lands three huge blows before the ref stops the fight. McFedries said he was going to win an explosive first round win and he did.

UFC Fight Night: Sam Stout vs. Spencer Fisher - Prefight Picks

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Main Event: Sam Stout vs. Spencer Fisher

Who we want to win: Spencer Fisher
Who we think will win: Spencer Fisher

Spencer Fisher

Last year Sam Stout won a three round decision over Spencer Fisher at UFC 58: USA vs. Canada. This win doesn’t paint the whole picture though. Spencer Fisher was a last minute replacement for Kenny “Let Go” Florian who got injured in training. At that point in time Fisher had been competing at 170 lbs. and ended up dropping nearly 20 lbs. for this fight in a very short time span. So Spencer Fisher wasn’t only going against a tough opponent in Sam Stout he also was fighting for the first time at a new weight after cutting nearly 20 lbs. all on short notice. This fight went the distance and Stout barely pulled of a decision.

With all that in mind I say this fight goes to Spencer Fisher. He has now had three more fights at 155 lbs., two of which he won, and is able to train and prepare for this fight adequately. Fisher has more experience than Sam Stout and has been more active in the octagon since their last meeting. Sam Stout’s only action in the UFC in the last year was getting dominated by Kenny “Let Go” Florian at the Ultimate Fighter 3 finale. Spencer Fisher is going to come into this fight on fire wanting to avenge his previous loss against Stout and to get the momentum going again that he had before his recent lost to the number one UFC light weight contender Hermes Franca.

Roan Carneiro vs. Jon Fitch

Who we think will win: Jon Fitch

Jon Fitch

Jon Fitch is on a five win tear right now. He has finished three out of his last five fights, and all of those finishes were over notable opponents like Josh Burkman, Thiago Alves and Luigi Fioravanti. Roan Carneiro is rather obscure and a newcomer to the UFC with only a three round decision over Rich Clementi in the UFC, which isn’t worth much. Fitch could get caught in Carneiro’s Jiu Jitsu, but if stays smart he will most likely prove dominate and add a sixth win to his streak.

Jordan Radev vs. Drew McFedries

Who we think will win: Drew McFedries

Drew McFedries

This fight could be a toss up. There isn’t much info on Jordan Radev other than stats. He is 16-1 and has been fighting professionally since 2002. He is relatively experienced but this is his UFC debut. McFedries on the other hand is less experienced overall and coming off a loss to a tough Martin Kampmann, but has two fights under his belt in the UFC already. As has been seen in the past fighters can choke under the pressure of a debut while others shine and really leave a mark. This fight really seems like it is a test for both fighters but the edge is going to go to McFedries due to his UFC octagon experience.

These are our picks if you disagree let us know in the comments below.
