It was officially announced yesterday that Anderson Silva, Forrest Griffin, BJ Penn and Kenny Florian are going to be headlining UFC 101. It is truly amazing that mega fights like these could immediately follow the other massive mega fights scheduled for UFC 100.
This event is going to truly satisfy some fighting hunger pains fans have been feeling lately. First, and most recently, the lack of fire that Anderson Silva has been showing in the Octagon. Match maker Joe Silva has shown true genius in setting this fight. It does two things, one, pits Anderson Silva against a top tier fighter in a new weight class that will force him to defend his ego, and two, Forrest Griffin only knows one speed when he fights, full speed ahead. We won’t be seeing any of this drop-to-my-back business that we saw Leites pull.
In addition, we finally get to see BJ Penn back at 155. He has always fought best there, always will. His jumping back and forth between 155 and 170 is maddening. Florian has clearly deserved this shot for a while now and he looks to be the only person in that weight class that could give Penn any trouble. Will he win? I don’t think so, but it is going to be an amazing fight regardless.
