It appears that the Quebec boxing commission is deciding to invoke rule #12, which prohibits elbow and knee strikes in an MMA match. With a headliner Anderson Silva on the card there is no way the UFC would even consider dealing with those rules. As noted on the NHB show:
“Previously in Canada, they have adhered to the “American Unified Rules” when it came to MMA matches but these were never part of the official regulations. To summarize the rule changes under the current regulations: No elbow or knee strikes, a smaller cage than the current Octagon, and halts to the fight when a fighter is knocked down to make sure he is okay to continue.”
These rules basically defeat the whole purpose of an MMA match. It’s strange that this is coming up now after UFC 83 already happened. The UFC’s Mark Ratner, UFC’s Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs, is on the job though.
“We’re aware of the situation and working with [the RACJ and the Quebec Boxing Commission] to resolve the situation, I’m confident that this will all work out.”
UFC 97 will happen but where looks to be up in the air at the moment.
